Health Canada regulates prescription drugs under its Medication Schedule as part of thePrescription Drug Price Review Act

This regulation requires Medication Prices to reflect the full year of sale and, as part of the Medication Schedule, is subject to the Price Exclusions and Price Restrictions Act, which apply to prescription drugs that are sold for recreational purposes, as well as to other drugs that are not listed on this Medication Schedule. Prices will be updated regularly under the Health Canada price review regulation.

Regulators have several options to manage prescription drug prices:

Generic alternatives

Generic alternatives to branded prescription drugs are also available. These drugs, like Viagra (sildenafil), work in different ways to treat erectile dysfunction. Many branded drugs (branded in Canada) contain the same active ingredients as their generic counterparts and have similar effects.

Generic alternatives to branded prescription drugs may not work as well or are available in lower cost generics. However, some manufacturers stock more than the equivalent branded alternatives. Some generic manufacturers may be able to offer lower prices on branded drugs, though this may not be the case for some generic alternatives.

Dosage and strength

Dosages for branded prescription drugs may vary depending on the brand and strength of the drug. For example, the dosage for erectile dysfunction (ED) medicines (e.g. Viagra) may be higher if the brand name version is more expensive. In some cases, the brand may be available in lower strength strengths.

Pricing options

Brand-name prescription drugs must be dispensed in a pharmacy with a valid prescription from a licensed medical professional. They may be supplied in bulk from time to time, or they may be supplied in a pack of three pills.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued a warning for the popular erectile dysfunction drug Cialis. The agency said that there is no evidence that it has been linked to any adverse health effects, including heart problems. The warning comes just a few weeks after the drug was withdrawn from the market for a similar use by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

FDA issued the warning about the drug after the FDA's advisory committee on Wednesday recommended that the drug remain on the market and that the Food and Drug Administration be required to act on the evidence. The committee said it found no evidence the drug caused heart problems, but recommended that it be considered on the basis of the FDA's analysis.

The FDA said it was concerned about the lack of evidence that the drug caused these problems. It said the agency's review of more than 30,000 patient reports found that some patients taking the drug were able to stop taking the pills, but the studies did not prove that the pills caused the problems.

The FDA said the drug can cause a condition known as priapism, a permanent damage to the penis. This condition can result from a variety of factors, including erectile dysfunction, diabetes, and other conditions. The FDA said the safety profile of the drug was "confident" the drug was safe for use. However, its review of more than 30,000 patient reports found that some patients had experienced "symptoms that were not listed on the label" that included problems with blood flow to the penis.

The FDA said there is no evidence the drug caused priapism or that it was a direct result of an allergic reaction to Viagra or similar drugs. The drug's maker, Pfizer Inc., said it was concerned about the lack of evidence that it caused these problems. Pfizer, however, said there was no evidence it had been linked to these problems. The company said there was no evidence there was a link between the drug and a serious heart condition. The company said it was concerned about the lack of evidence that it has studied the drug and the lack of information on its benefits and risks.

FDA said the agency is reviewing all information submitted by patients who have taken Viagra and will be required to provide more information.

"The safety and efficacy of Viagra have not been assessed in a definitive fashion by FDA, and there is no evidence Viagra caused these adverse health effects in patients taking the drug," it said. "The FDA should not delay the initiation of new treatment options for patients who are taking Viagra, and the safety and efficacy of Viagra have not been evaluated in a definitive fashion in patients who are taking other ED drugs or other similar treatments for the same disease."
